After almost 30 years listening to poor families’ anguished stories and giving them emergency food, clothing, financial help and a bit of hope, she is retiring as executive director of Jacksonville’s Downtown Ecumenical Services Council.
She has loved the job, even on the days clients got frustrated with her because she could not give them what they wanted between their 90-day eligibility periods. Even in the economic downtown, when demand increased as donations dropped.
“I loved coming to work every day,” she said. “There are not many people who every day get to do good and have a family say, ‘God bless you.’ ”
